RANGER exploits the benefits derived from different recent ground-breaking research results in photonic and microwave technologies, OTH and MIMO Radar technologies, machine learning and data fusion mechanisms, advanced decision support systems and data analytics algorithms. All these technologies are combined, along with interoperability means and advanced user interfaces, using a state-of-the-art iterative software and hardware development methodology in order to deliver the overall RANGER platform. RANGER will advance the current state-of-the-art in maritime surveillance technology in the following areas:
Over the Horizon Radar Systems for Maritime Traffic Surveillance: such OTH radar systems are developed in order to overcome current limitations of existing maritime surveillance systems such as the radar horizon limit (some tens of kilometer) and small boats detection beyond the horizon
Photonics-Enhanced MIMO Radars: exploits the advantages of MIMO and Photonic technologies. This radar will be designed to address major shortages of state-of-the-art radar systems, that is resolution, fast manoeuvring targets detection, maximum number of targets detectable and furthermore cost effectiveness.
Early Warning System: The combination of the above two complementary technologies (OTH and PE-MIMO) will take us a step further towards the design, implementation and provision of a system that supports maritime surveillance operators, by providing early warnings, alerts and recommendations to its users, leveraging on advanced Machine Learning algorithms.
